FAQ for Coding Workshop: Python Basics

  • Why wasn't this announced from the start ?

First. It is difficult to start with the workshop directly while you’re still figuring out what is Brightspace-Bat-Desktop.

Secondly. You’re just starting out in Python. Once you have your setup and became a bit familiar with the language then you can start joining this workshop.

  • Do I get extra credits ? and is it really free !?

Credits ? None. This falls under the catagory “extracurricular activities“, and as such you only get bragging rights, and you can include it on your cv or even demo your game online !

Free ? why yes it is. This is a completely self-funded endeavour with regards to time and costs.

  • Will I become a better coder ?

Well yes. More time spent coding = More time training that muscle.

Will you suddenly be able to solve all Coding-Bat tasks ? No, but you will learn how to approach coding tasks better.

  • I want to learn Python but don't like games. Can I still join ?

For sure ! You’re still in-essence solving puzzles and that’s always fun (If you ask me).

  • Why aren't we using Godot or Unity ?

Well you’re learning about data and AI.

You have no need of learning how the UI of a program works and all it’s intricate details.

Focus on the basics. After all you’re still in year 1.

  • What will happen at the end of the block ?

We will finish the proposed game first.

Then demo it when the block ends so your fellow students and mentors can play it and see your work.

  • The Class is full ! What now !?

Ah jammer. Well we could see if we can open up more spaces in the week but for now. You’ll have to wait for the next block to join.

    I will keep you informed.

  • But then I no longer need Python help ! the exams are coming.

I understand your frustration. Sadly we have minimal space and time for this club. Coding-Bat is still there though. Keep doing that !

  • Will there be other classes ?

Yes ! As you progress through the blocks and years. You’ll see more classes that you can apply to. Keep an eye out for posters and notifications on your Brightspace.
